Furious McKinnon lambasts United

- By Gerry McWilliams

DUNDEE UNITED boss Ray McKinnon let rip after his side crashed to a dismal defeat in Dumfries.

His side are four points adrift of Falkirk in second spot after Queens notched up a first win in six games at Palmerston.

Goals from Derek Lyle and Stephen Dobbie were cancelled out by United hitman Thomas Mikkelsen.

However, Lyndon Dykes made it 3-2 to the hosts with eight minutes left before Dale Hilson completed United’s miserable afternoon.

And furious gaffer McKinnon said: ‘It was unacceptable.

‘For a 10-minute spell at 2-2, I thought we were going to win the game. But the horrible side of what we’ve been doing rears its ugly head again.

‘Our defending was outrageous, really bad. We’re killing ourselves.

‘I thought we were miles off it throughout the team. We keep missing opportunities and they tend to be away from home.

‘I’m mad with them. I’m really, really angry. There are no excuses and I’m so frustrated.

‘This is the same group of players that can play at a decent level and it looked like there was nothing left in the tank.

‘They are a decent bunch of guys and an honest bunch. Thomas scored two goals and we never gave him any service. He’s the only guy that will get any credit from me.

Queens grabbed the opener when Lyle slotted a Dobbie pass into the far corner of the net.

However, United levelled eight minutes later when a Kyle Jacobs clearance rebounded off Ali Coote for Mikkelsen — who converted from a narrow angle.

A topsy-turvy half saw Queens reclaim the lead before the break, Dom Thomas setting up Dobbie to rifle home.

United equalised through Mikkelsen’s thumping strike from a rebound.

Dykes superbly controlled a long ball before firing home to restore Queens’ lead and Hilson sealed victory for Gary Naysmith’s side late on with a cool finish.

Queens boss Naysmith said: ‘We’ve worked hard and the players deserve a lot of credit.’
