Game up north has given Rodgers plenty of reasons to remain

-

OUTWITH the worst result in Celtic’s history in Gibraltar and the Siege of Barcelona, Brendan Rodgers’ debut campaign as manager has been a serene procession towards an early title party at Tynecastle.

He is on a handsome wedge and has the challenge of the Champions League next term, so, contrary to the opinions of some, why would he even consider going elsewhere?

Rodgers (right) has not rebuilt the CV to the degree that he could return to a top-five club in England. Why, then, settle for taking West Brom or someone similarly dreary to Sunderland for a goalless draw on a Monday night when there is such merry chaos here.

Just look at the last week. Neil Lennon giving it the full Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men at his Press call after teaching Pedro Caixinha, a bullfighter replacing a Rangers manager who may or may not have resigned, what a ‘square go’ is, all before St Johnstone offered up their own version at the Superseal Stadium yesterday. A coked-up Hibs fan on the pitch at the Scottish Cup final, trying to punch the Rangers captain and then hitting someone with a chair, dodging jail. The SFA performance director and PFA chairman writing off most of our Under-21 players as wasters. Darren Fletcher, the national team captain, telling how he begged the SFA not to dress him up in pink. Let’s not even go into the rest of the season. Joey Barton, Rod Stewart at the cup draw, Mark McGhee and mobile phones, Graeme Murty’s handstand, Martyn Waghorn squaring up to schoolweans, etc.

Heaven knows what Rodgers really makes of it, but it must be nice to work in an environment where the game really, truly does colour the lives of so many.

For all Scottish football’s problems, it is rarely dull. And it is very addictive. It is why we are all still here, after all.
