Edwards is unwilling to relax just yet at Jags

- By Graeme Croser

SO far as Ryan Edwards is concerned, the summer holidays can wait.

Fully committed to Partick Thistle’s quest to finish fifth in the Premiership, a mission that continues in today’s early kick-off against Rangers, the Australian midfielder admits he has not given a second thought to where he might relax when the campaign ends.

Ideally, he would love to earn a stack of air miles without enjoying any downtime at all.

Edwards (below) earned a provisional international call-up for Australia’s national squad in March. Fingers are therefore crossed that national coach Ange Postecoglu has him in mind for the Socceroos’ extensive June engagements which will take in a World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia, a glamour friendly against Brazil and then participation in the Confederations Cup in Russia.

‘I haven’t booked any offseason plans because of the international window,’ said the 23-year-old.

‘I’m quite happy to wait and I’m quite spontaneous in the way I book holidays anyway.

‘The most important thing is to be in that senior national team. I’m on the radar — they have just kept tabs on those same 30-40 players for the June window.

‘If there is even a small chance of being involved I want to be ready. We have a lot of midfielders, so we will wait and see.’

Edwards’ rise to prominence is just another indicator of the fine season enjoyed by Alan Archibald and his players, one in which they have finished on the right side of the top-flight split for the first time.

‘This is what we set out to achieve this season and it’s what every other team in the bottom half wanted,’ added Edwards.

‘But sixth is not good enough. We want to go and chase Hearts and we are only four points off them.

‘We don’t want to be the team that makes it and then gets run over by the big five, we want to push on even further.

‘We are the only team not to take points off Rangers this season which is disappointing.

‘Losing to them at Firhill hurt, but we can take confidence from that day because we played well.’

RYAN EDWARDS was speaking at official Partick Thistle car sponsor, Macklin Motors Nissan Glasgow Central’s new £5million Port Dundas Road dealership.
