At last… a PM ready to tackle our health crisis

-

I salute the way Theresa May has pledged to boost the number of mental health professionals by 10,000 by 2020, and to make sure every school is equipped to deal with problems such as cyber-bullying.

Mental health awareness has come a long way in recent years but it is still a huge step to ask for help if you’re struggling, so I take my hat off to celebrities including Cara Delevingne, Catherine ZetaJones, Freddie Flintoff and Fearne Cotton who have admitted having problems in the past.

One in four people in the UK will experience issues at some point in their lives so it is important that these problems are tackled. David Courtney, Weston-super-Mare The news is very welcome and overdue. For too long, people with mental health issues have been neglected and poorly served by an inadequate system. The stigma attached to mental health must change and a better framework be put in place to help sufferers. Nick Fletcher, Malton, North Yorkshire It’s been good to see political parties focus on mental health in their Election campaigns, with promises of further funding, work in schools and a pledge to scrap the Mental Health Act. But we know many people are left without the support they need to live full, independent lives. Mental health is one of the biggest domestic issues facing our country, and as more people demand change, our expectations for better mental health for all are higher than ever.

Whoever is in power after June 8 must rise to this challenge. Paul Farmer, Chief Executive, Mind It was refreshing to read of Theresa May’s determination to rip up the Mental Health Act.

If only she would also look into the Children’s Act and rip up the agreement to hold secret family courts, which remove thousands of children every year from parental care for unsubstantiated reasons, at great cost to the public.

This nightmare is causing mental health issues for some parents and children, who have no redress. J. Simpson, Morley, West Yorkshire
