Fitting finale for winger as he adds a splash of style

- From Chris Foy

IT DIDN’T take long for the historic deed to be done. The record fell in the 13th minute, when Chris Ashton fell to earth in trademark fashion.

Given all his scoring feats on behalf of Saracens, it was fitting that the former England wing should claim his 37th European try in the colours of the London club, in his final tournament appearance before joining Toulon. And it was equally appropriate he should mark the occasion with the ‘Ash Splash’ swallow-dive finish.

Going into the Champions Cup Final, the 30-year-old stood level with ex-Toulouse flier Vincent Clerc on 36 tries in continental competition.

Ashton’s predatory instincts are renowned and he chose another grand event to demonstrate his party piece. From a lineout, the attack shifted across the field as far as Alex Goode whose clever kick delivered the ball into the path of Saracens’ No 14. It bounced up invitingly and having scorched around Scott Spedding, he gathered and soared through the air.

So, the former Wigan rugby league player is poised for a cross-Channel move. Ashton (above right, celebrating Saracens’ win with Chris Wyles and Alex Goode) will take this European try record with him — with the intention of building up a formidable tally. ‘It is nice to be involved in these records,’ he said, prior to the final. ‘It is something I will look back on when I finish playing. But I am only 30 and I hope there are going to be a couple more [tries] yet.’ Asked if he would target a halfcentury, he added: ‘60.’

Once the Splash had been seen again, Ashton was content to do his defensive duty. His prize was another major title.
