Despair over ‘robotic’ interview

-

FRESH doubts over Theresa May’s ability to respond to the Grenfell Tower disaster were voiced last night after she was accused of lacking ‘empathy’ during a television interview.

One Tory MP said of the Prime Minister’s appearance on BBC2’s Newsnight on Friday: ‘We all know that Theresa has of course been deeply moved by this tragedy. But I despair that she appears unable to show it – she comes across as so robotic.’

Mrs May, who was criticised for not meeting survivors of the blaze until Friday, looked uncomfortable as Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis said: ‘You misread the public mood on this one. You misread the anger that people feel about this.’ The PM appeared to avoid the subject by saying that earlier in the week she had been focusing on making sure the ‘public services had the support that they needed’.

One Twitter user said he was appalled by Mrs May’s ‘lack of empathy and complete avoidance of the issues’.
