SWIM STAR MILEY FINDS SHE IS THE VETERAN OF SCOTTISH TALENT POOL
SIX Scots are in Budapest for the World Swimming Championships looking to strike gold over the next few days.
They are part of a 27strong Team GB squad that has arrived in Hungary for the meet — which gets underway today — after a short training camp at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
The six Scots going for glory are Hannah Miley, Duncan Scott, Ross Murdoch, Stephen Milne, Kathleen Dawson and Mark Szaranek.
Miley is the most experienced and the 27-year-old goes straight into the action today in the 200metre individual medley heats.
In 2009, the University of Aberdeen swimmer went to the World Championships in Rome and has been at further big events in Shanghai, Barcelona and Kazan as well as competing at three Olympics.
‘When I went to Rome in 2009 it was amazing, but all these years later I am just as competitive and excited to be going to Budapest,’ she said.
‘Getting selected for Great Britain is a very special thing. I think I am heading out to Hungary with a bit of a spring in my step, almost a new lease of life.’
Scott, 20, of the University of Stirling will be competing in the 100m and 200m freestyle as well as being available for the relays.
Team-mate Murdoch, 23, will compete in the 200m breaststroke.
For Milne (23, City of Perth Swim Club), Dawson (19, University of Stirling) and Szaranek (21, University of Edinburgh/University of Florida) the meet is a chance to put down a marker for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
