Bolt hits form in time for London

- By Jonathan McEvoy

USAIN BOLT said he is on target for a perfect send-off in London, confirming the evidence written on the stadium clock.

Bolt (below), who will retire after the World Championships in the old Olympic Stadium, ran under 10 seconds for the first time this season in winning the 100 metres at Friday’s Monaco Diamond League meet.

Bolt’s 9.95sec showed that treatment to alleviate back and hamstring injuries is working, as he aims for his 12th and 13th world golds in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

After a slow lap of honour, Bolt sat in the depths of the Stade Louis II to reflect on the penultimate individual race of his career — a measured run with a decent start and powerful finish to beat American Isiah Young, who finished in 9.98sec. Nobody else managed sub-10.

‘It is about execution in preparation for the Worlds,’ said Bolt, 30. ‘And I was happy with the way I executed the race. But we will have to see if coach (Glen) Mills agrees. We’ll see what we can improve.

‘I am going in the right direction, but there is still work to do. My time is coming at the right time. Everything is coming together.’

Bolt admitted exiting the stage post-London will be tough. ‘I’m here for the fans, and I will miss the vibe around the track,’ he said.

‘I have mixed emotions. I’m happy for my career and sad that it is ending.’
