Caixinha copies Brazil blueprint
PEDRO CAIXINHA has revealed that a Brazilian World Cupwinning squad is the inspiration behind his revamp of the captaincy framework at Rangers.
Lee Wallace will lead the Ibrox side into their Premiership opener at Motherwell — after admitting he expected to lose the honour when Bruno Alves signed.
While full-back Wallace will
retain the armband, Caixinha has nominated four other leaders on the pitch who he believes bring different captain characteristics.
Caixinha has asked Kenny Miller, Graham Dorrans and Niko Kranjcar to join Alves and Wallace in a distribution of responsibility throughout the group.
It’s a concept Caixinha noted from Luiz Felipe Scolari who led Brazil to 2002 glory and Portugal to the 2004 European Championship Final.
‘I wanted to spread leadership, and I learned from Scolari when he won the 2002 World Cup,’ explained Caixinha.
‘The main captain was Cafu who was the big leader. But a silent guy can also be a leader because, if you give him the ball, he can lead the team. Then we also need a guy going around doing the shouting on the pitch — someone a little like Muttley!
‘And then there is the guy who is seeing everything on the pitch and organising. That’s another type of leader. So with the five guys, I have it all together. For me, it’s not important who is wearing the armband. But Lee will keep it.’
Caixinha admits he is not ready to unveil his £2.5million summer signing Carlos Pena and added: ‘Carlos is learning that while football is about time and space, the game here is more physical.’
