‘Wrong bolt gun’ failed to kill pig

-

FOR many viewers, one of Eden’s most distressing scenes involved a pig having its throat cut.

But Glenn Moores claims an even more disturbing incident was edited out of the show’s final footage, when the slaughter of another pig went horribly wrong.

He says an unsuitable bolt gun supplied by producers failed to kill the animal after two attempts.

The pig was eventually shot twice with a rifle after it smashed through a fence in scenes he described as ‘the most horrific thing you’ve ever seen’.

As the designated hunter of the group, it was IT consultant and gamekeeper Glenn’s job to kill the 300kg Tamworth pig for the group’s Christmas dinner. Producers of the Channel 4 show had provided a bolt gun, which is supposed to cause death instantly and cause the animal no pain.

Glenn complained to the production team that he did not believe the gun would be sufficient for such a large pig. But he says they insisted that they had taken advice from the Humane Slaughter Association.

Glenn said: ‘Everything I’d told them could potentially go wrong had gone wrong. Without their interference that animal wouldn’t have suffered. That’s the sort of burden I had to carry in there. Production never mentioned it again.’

A spokesman for Channel 4 said that an adequate bolt gun had been provided.
