Sarpong’s spot-on... we can’t have it all

-

Well done June Sarpong for her wise words in You magazine last week. The TV presenter said it was a ‘lie’ that women could have both children and a career. Unfortunately, it’s true. There are very few cases of women having a family and knocking it out of the park career-wise. Something has to give when doing the most important job in the world – raising a child. And women will always have a stronger nurturing instinct than men, so the bulk of the duty naturally falls to them. I also liked what she said about the prospect that, at 40, she might not have children. ‘I’m from an African tradition that says it takes a village to raise a child,’ she explained, adding that there are plenty of roles that women can fill with the children of siblings – roles that can still give great satisfaction. How refreshing to see a celebrity so beautifully dressed, as opposed to the nonsense often worn by stars who have been persuaded by some designer that it’s the ‘latest’ thing. June looked great. Let’s hope she’s set the trend for smart looks. Rosemary Davies, Blaenavon Torfaen, South Wales
