Magpies flying as Lascelles strikes

-

NEWCASTLE captain Jamaal Lascelles scored for the second game in a row as he helped guide the Magpies to a 2-1 success against Stoke.

With manager Rafa Benitez making his return to the dugout following surgery, Christian Atsu had put the home side ahead, stroking home from a glorious Matt Ritchie pass in the first half.

Stoke wideman Xherdan Shaqiri levelled the scores 12 minutes after the interval, bending his effort in from distance.

However, Newcastle were not to be denied their third win on the trot as Lascelles popped up on 68 minutes to head the ball in from a Ritchie cross.

Lascelles said: ‘It’s three wins and we’re pleased, but today it could have been three, four, five goals.

‘We had a lot of chances and it was a great intensity from the boys from the start.’

Jamie Vardy earned Leicester City a point at Huddersfield from the penalty spot.

The Terriers had led through Laurent Depoitre’s effort after less than a minute in the second half.

But less than five minutes later, Leicester had the chance to tie things up after Andy King was brought down in the box by Chris Lowe.

The Foxes could have won the match, though, but Elias Kachunga’s touch on Mathias Jorgensen’s initial strike was ruled out for offside.

Elsewhere, West Brom and West Ham played out a goalless draw at the Hawthorns, as Gareth Barry equalled Ryan Giggs’ record of 632 Premier League appearances.
