DOBBIE DOUBLE SAVES QUEENS FROM TROUBLE

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH needed extra-time to edge past Montrose 3-1 in the third round of the Irn-Bru Cup.

The League Two side earned a shock lead through full-back Terry Masson on 22 minutes. The Gable Endies were three minutes from holding on to an excellent victory until Stephen Dobbie lashed home a loose ball in the penalty area.

Gary Naysmith’s side seized control in extra-time and Lyndon Dykes netted the killer second on 113 minutes before Dobbie grabbed his second in the final minute to seal a spot in the quarter-finals for Queens.

Northern Irish side Crusaders eased through to the last eight thanks to a 3-0 win over Cove Rangers in the Highlands.

Michael Carvill opened the scoring just before half-time with a clever lob over Cove goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie.

Jamie Clackin doubled the lead on the hour mark and Declan Caddell rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

The New Saints kept Welsh hopes of Irn-Bru Cup glory alive with a convincing 4-0 home victory over Elgin City.

The managerles­s League Two outfit were blown away in the first 45 minutes as TNS surged into a 3-0 lead.

Goals from Greg Draper, Aeron Edwards and Jamie Mullan put the Welsh champions in charge. Draper added a fourth goal in the 61st minute to ensure The New Saints will be in Tuesday’s last-eight draw.
