AFTER OUTRUNNING THE CHEETAHS, WARRIORS MUST NOW KEEP PACE WITH EUROPEAN GIANTS

-

GLASGOW’S POOL 3 OPPONENTS

Exeter Chiefs: Based in the deep south-west of England, the Chiefs have smashed the hegemony of English rugby thanks to the money of colourful telecommunications entrepreneur Tony Rowe and low-key guidance of director of rugby Rob Baxter.

Previously best known for hosting New Zealand’s first match in the northern hemisphere, in 1905, the game from which came the typo slip ‘all blacks’ that created the name, Exeter’s dreams were realised last season when they won the Aviva Premiership. Sights are now set on a European crown.

Dangermen: Nic White, Henry Slade and Jack Nowell.

Leinster Rugby: The Dubliners’ Euro pedigree goes back to the first tournament, where they reached the semi-finals, and they won the cup in 2009 beating Leicester in the final. Leinster have won it another twice since but in the last five years the best they have done is the last four. Good start to the Pro14, they have lost just once, away to the Cheetahs.

Dangermen: Scott Fardy and Johnny Sexton.

Montpellier: The ‘Galacticos’ are rising fast and owner Mohed Altrad laughs off criticism his spending is out of control. With Vern Cotter and Nathan Hines in charge, Louis Picamoles prized from Northampton with a £1million pay-off, and worldclass backs Ruan Pienaar, Aaron Cruden and Jan Serfontein added to a squad that finished third in the regular Top 14 last season, it is no surprise to see them setting the pace this term.

Dangermen: After Picamoles, Pienaar and Cruden, you should watch out for Jesse Mogg and Yacouba Camara.
