In hiding, Scot wanted for ‘frat party’ shooting

- By Kirsten Johnson

A SCOTS teenager wanted in the United States in connection with a shooting at a university fraternity party is reportedly hiding out in Aberdeen.

Daniel Magee, who is accused of opening fire at a security guard at a frat party near the University of Texas in Austin in September last year, failed to attend a court hearing in the US state last month and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The Press and Journal newspaper reported yesterday that it had tracked down the 19-year-old, who grew up in Aberdeen, to a house in the Dyce area of the city.

Police Scotland are unable to arrest the teenager as an international arrest warrant has not been issued.

According to court papers, security guard Edward Earls removed Mr Magee from the gathering, organised by the Sigma Chi fraternity group, for causing trouble. It is alleged Mr Magee returned to the address around 30 minutes later with two roommates and shot the guard’s foot. His roommates were not charged.

Mr Magee is then said to have fled the scene of the shooting but was later tracked down and arrested by Texan police and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon – a first degree felony in Texas.

He was released from custody on $50,000 (£38,000) bail and has attended a number of preliminary court hearings.

However, last month he failed to attend a hearing and a warrant was issued ordering Texas

officers and sheriffs to re-arrest Mr Magee, with a new bail bond set at $100,000 (£76,000).

Mr Magee declined to comment on the case when approached by reporters at his family home in Dyce on Friday.

Mr Earls has since undergone a series of reconstructive operations on his foot and has launched a damages claim, worth around £4 million, against Mr Magee and Sigma Chi.
