Mackay will name Brown in Scotland squad
SCOTT BROWN will be named in caretaker boss Malky Mackay’s Scotland squad for next month’s friendly against the Netherlands at Pittodrie.
The Celtic captain came out of international retirement a year ago to aid Gordon Strachan’s flagging World Cup qualification bid — but had hinted that he might stand down again following a change of management.
The SFA have resolved to take their time in appointing a permanent successor to Strachan and have placed performance director Mackay in temporary charge.
Brown met with Mackay last week to discuss the way forward and, while there remains a question mark over his long-term future in dark blue, he has agreed to be part of the squad which will be announced tomorrow.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who previously worked with Mackay at Watford, has given his blessing to Brown’s continued involvement.
‘I had a good chat with Malky and suggested it would be good for him to speak with Browny,’ said Rodgers.
‘Browny’s got good experience of the level and knows the players well and it’s good for Scott to hear Malky, as he’s a good man trying to do things the right way.
‘I said to Scott that he doesn’t need to decide now. There’s a friendly fixture, so he doesn’t need to rush into any decision now and after that the next games are March and then September. He’s got time.’ KILLIE HIJACK THE SHOW — See SPORT Pages 8-9
