Even worse news: butter IS bad for you after all

-

OH CRUMBS!

BUTTER is bad for your health – and studies saying that it isn’t are not just wrong, but potentially fatal, experts have warned.

They say saturated fats found in meat and dairy products really do clog arteries causing heart disease and strokes – and that a 2014 study which concluded they were largely harmless was badly flawed.

That report led to people ditching low-fat foods such as breakfast cereals in favour of bacon and eggs, believing that carbohydrates, particularly sugar, are the real devil.

Dr Neal Barnard, of the George Washington University in the US capital, said there was ‘no question’ that people were dying of heart attacks and strokes due to what he called the ‘misuse’ of nutrition research.

He said: ‘When people slather butter all over their toast, put cheese all over their pizza or burger – or frankly eat meat itself – they are increasing their risk of heart disease. And probably Alzheimer’s disease too.’

The 2014 analysis, led by Cambridge University, pooled the results of 72 studies to conclude there was no evidence that people should cut saturated fats to prevent heart disease.

But Dr Barnard alleged the research was flawed and cherrypicked the studies it was based on.

The lead author of the 2014 analysis did not respond to a request for comment.
