Smash! Andy unleashes a stunning verbal volley at Trump

- By Danielle Zoellner

HE MAY not be renowned for his sense of humour, but tennis star Andy Murray proved an ace at parody when he mocked Donald Trump on Twitter.

The former Wimbledon champion poked fun at the US President for claiming he ‘took a pass’ on being named Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year for 2017.

In a late-night tweet on Friday, Mr Trump wrote: ‘Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named Man (Person) of the Year, like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photoshoot.’

With his trademark vanity and lack of subtlety, Mr Trump added: ‘I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!’

A little over an hour later, Murray responded to Mr Trump, who was indeed named Time’s person of the year in 2016. Murray tweeted: ‘BBC just called to say I was PROBABLY going to be named sports personality of the year but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photoshoot.

‘I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!’

Murray is a three-times BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner but after struggling with injury is unlikely to feature in this year’s running. His jibe prompted other stars to mimic the President’s tweet, including actress Julia LouisDreyfus who tweeted she had turned down the New York Times for ‘comedienne of the year’.

Time Magazine later refuted Mr Trump’s claims, tweeting: ‘The President is incorrect about how we choose Person Of The Year. Time does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6.’

President Trump won the accolade in 2016 after his whirlwind campaign and win over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Earlier this year, Mr Trump bragged he had the most Time covers after being on the magazine’s front page 14 times. In fact, US President Richard Nixon holds the record, with 55 appearances.
