Police question pair over Tube station stampede
TWO men handed themselves in to police yesterday after CCTV images were released of suspects allegedly involved in an altercation that sparked a mass stampede from Oxford Circus Tube station.
Nine people were taken to hospital, including one with leg injuries, after panic erupted in the packed station on Friday evening.
As crowds fled up escalators and staircases before spilling out on to the street, fear swept through the heart of the West End that a terror attack could be under way.
The panic was compounded by false reports of gunshots being fired at department store Selfridges, almost half a mile from Oxford Circus station.
Oxford Street was put in lockdown as armed police flooded the area and terrified shoppers sought refuge in stores including John Lewis, Topshop and Zara.
Pop star Olly Murs and comedian Russell Brand were later accused of stirring up extra needless panic by posting messages on social media live from the scene.
Hours after releasing images of the suspects, British Transport Police said two men, aged 21 and 40, attended a police station voluntarily and were being interviewed.
Chief Superintendent Martin Fry said: ‘I would like to thank the public and the media for assisting us with this witness appeal.’
Selfridges said it was back to business as usual yesterday and that it had only suffered ‘very limited stock loss’ in the confusion.
