THINGS WE LEARNED

- By Gary Heatly

Huw Jones looks bound for greatness

Eighteen months ago not a lot of Scots had heard of the centre who playing in South Africa at the time. However, 11 caps later and seven tries to his name means that this silky footballer is now a household name.

The Ali Price-Finn Russell axis is just getting started

They have now played a number of Scotland games together at nine and 10 and at 24 and 25 have so much more rugby to come. Their game management gets better with every passing game and they can take Scotland to another level yet.

Just call John Barclay ‘Captain Fantastic’

Remember that this back-row did not play for the national team for large chunks of 2013, 2014 and 2015, but now he is the glue holding everything together. Is a very calm leader and the smile on his face when he scored his try late on said it all.

Scots now have back three options

With Stuart Hogg missing due to a late injury, Scotland could still put out a back three of Byron McGuigan, Tommy Seymour and Sean Maitland. As well as Hogg there is still Lee Jones, Chris Harris, Dougie Fife, Tim Visser, Ruaridh Jackson and others who can come in and do a job.

Australia must be the sick of the sight of Scotland

They were coming to Edinburgh for revenge after a loss to Scotland in Sydney in June. That one hurt, but perhaps not as much as this one when they were overrun in every department and could not cope.
