HUNTER’S FIVE OTHER WINDIES FAVOURITES
1 NEVIS
Sweet island, small but perfectly formed with some nice hotels. I always think the name sounds Scottish – which then makes me think I’m in the Highlands, only with sunshine.
2 ST BARTS
French island, hence some snooty French waiters. Considered more cool these days than Barbados, which is now full of footballers. Chic shops, yachts, parties. Some classy hotels, my fave being Eden Rock.
3 DOMINICA
Dominated by its rainforest, complete with waterfalls and lakes, few beaches but good diving. Devastated recently by hurricanes but now bouncing back on her feet. (All Caribbean islands are female.)
4 CUBA
A big island, a proper nation with proud people, fascinating culture and history, urban delights as well as fab beaches. Bound to be the No1 Caribbean destination very soon. Havana is an exciting capital. Hurry before mass America takes over.
5 BARBADOS
First Carib island I visited, going there on Concorde in 1986. Been back every year since, so I must like it. Civilised, everything works, safe, easy to get to, loads of luxury hotels, yet I now stay for a shorter and shorter time. Perfect for beginners, but not the real Caribbean – not since they started growing golf courses instead of plantations.
