Tuning into Docherty Show helps put boss on the right wavelength

- By Fraser Mackie

GRAEME MURTY describes his team’s last meeting with Hamilton as ‘a real low for us’. The Rangers manager could also recap the day by discussing ‘a real find for us’.

For the stand-out visiting player in the 2-0 defeat, the first of Murty’s second stint as Ibrox boss, was Accies’ young central midfield powerhouse Greg Docherty.

Already scribbled in scouting notebooks of Mark Allen’s staff, he stamped himself a Rangers player in waiting with an all-action display that featured the assist for the decisive 81st-minute clincher from Darren Lyon.

The 21-year-old might have been found blushing at the back of the team meeting room at the Rangers Football Centre on Thursday morning as Murty pored over footage of the match with his squad.

Murty explained: ‘We had a few clips put together about them and we did an analysis on Accies — it’s the Greg Docherty show! In the second goal he bursts from midfield, showing good energy, good legs.

‘A good cross and goal. If it was our goal, I’d be really, really happy with it. It’s a lesson for us to say this is what they’re really good at.

‘We have to understand their mentality and psyche to try to pull it apart and break it up. We have Greg in the building too, who was quizzed quite closely.

‘He was on the club’s radar before that game. We knew about him for a while — he just had quite a good day.’
