Jones dived for Killie penalty, claims McInnes

- By Benjamin Palmer

ABERDEEN manager Derek McInnes last night accused Jordan Jones of diving to earn the penalty — converted by Kris Boyd — which earned Kilmarnock a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay.

Jones, having skipped past Shay Logan and Kari Arnason, went down as the former clipped at his heels.

McInnes insisted there was no contact and, if there was, then right-back Logan should have been sent off, having been booked earlier

scampered across his line to push it wide.

The resultant delivery, again from McKenzie, was met by Stuart Findlay, who flicked it on towards the unmarked Boyd. Six yards from goal, he blazed his volley high into the Richard Donald Stand.

Kilmarnock were now in the game and they started the second half positively, too, with Boyd seeing a header held by Woodman.

Arnason almost doubled the hosts’ lead, but MacDonald was at full stretch to push away his header from McGinn’s free-kick.

Aberdeen looked ragged at the back. Arnason gifted Killie a corner when he passed yards wide of Woodman and Jordan Jones was giving them problems when cutting in from the left.

Scott McKenna shuffled across well to cut out Jones’ cross after he had skipped past Shay Logan and Arnason, and the winger also shot over from 25 yards.

Killie’s equaliser was a combination of Jones’ desire and complete disorganisation at the back from Aberdeen.

Jones got goal side of Logan and the defender was careful not to tread on his opponent’s heels. Arnason then should have stepped in when the ball briefly came out of Jones’ control, but he instead let the winger brush by him. With Logan eventually getting too close for comfort, Jones fell over.

Boyd stood up to take the resultant penalty-kick, and placed the ball high to Woodman’s left. He celebrated by pointing at his stomach, mocking the taunts of the home support about his rotund belly, with a smile on his face that stretched from ear to ear.

Rooney stabbed a Logan assist wide and headed straight at MacDonald from a Shinnie cross as Aberdeen attempted to nab a late winner, but it was not to be.

Statistics will show that this result extended Aberdeen’s undefeated run against Kilmarnock to 17 matches, but the real winners here were the Ayrshire side.
