No trophy is needed to satisfy Conte

- By Rob Draper

ANTONIO CONTE insists Chelsea should be satisfied with the job he has done this season at the club even if they end up without a trophy.

Chelsea take on Leicester in the quarter-finals today with Conte maintaining the team hugely over-achieved last season by winning the Premier League.

And that only a big financial investment in ‘great players’ could accelerate what he regards as a slow rebuilding process which has been ongoing since the end of the John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba years.

And Conte says that despite being fifth, and having been knocked out of the Champions League, he and the players will be able to hold their heads up high at the end of the season, even though he is likely to be replaced as manager by Luis Enrique.

‘I’m very satisfied with my job and the work we’re doing,’ said Conte. ‘Me, the staff, my players. We’re doing a fantastic job, also in this season.

‘Don’t forget this season has confirmed one thing: that last season we did an incredible achievement. This season confirms this.

‘Also if you remember we lost a lot of players, old players, that created a basis for Chelsea for a long time.

‘Now we are creating a fundamental basis. Then if you want to improve, to become strong, to accelerate this progress, you have to buy great players.’
