Spice Girls really, really wannabe superheroes

- From Peter Sheridan

THEY’RE famous for their Girl Power message and now the Spice Girls want to take it to the movies – as singing superheroes.

The band reunited in February for the first time in six years and announced they were ready to ‘reinforce our message of female empowerment for future generations’.

Now they are planning an animated adventure with characters based on the band members who were known as Posh, Scary, Baby, Ginger and Sporty. The characters will be voiced by the singers, better known now by their real names: Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Melanie Chisholm. An insider told showbusiness trade magazine Variety: ‘They are fired up about the idea. It’s perfect for them because it won’t involve too much of their time, they can record voiceovers while working on their solo projects – and the animated versions of the girls can look years younger without everyone wondering if they’ve had surgery.’

The group hopes it will be the first of many animated superhero feature films that will spawn lucrative hit soundtrack albums. ‘They’re thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale,’ said the source.

Creative Artists Agency, on behalf of the group, is pitching the project to Hollywood studios. Band manager Simon Fuller declined to comment.

The Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and split in 2000, made the Spice World movie in 1997. It earned £55 million.
