Tchenguiz’s fury over TV documentary

- By Neil Craven

PROPERTY mogul Robert Tchenguiz is in a bitter row with the BBC over a documentary he says left him feeling ‘exploited’.

The programme, Robbie’s War: The Rise And Fall Of A Playboy Billionaire, airs at 9pm tomorrow.

Tchenguiz said he agreed with director Lynn Alleway to ‘portray the legal challenges’ since the banking crash in 2008 and spent three months filming.

But in a statement released last night he said he viewed parts of the programme and claimed it ‘sensationalises all aspects of my personal life while giving an imprecise and inaccurate view of my legal battle’.

He said he co-operated in ‘good faith’, but the footage is ‘well beyond what we agreed’. He also claimed some quotes had been ‘manipulated’.

Tchenguiz was wrongly arrested for fraud in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash. But the Serious Fraud Office has since paid him £1.5 million in damages.

The BBC refutes all Tchenguiz’s claims and ‘robustly stands by the film’.

A spokesman said: ‘This is a film made with his, his family’s and his lawyers’ full co-operation.

‘Given the impact this protracted and enduring battle has had on the family, both are integrally linked and, as was agreed with him, both the family and his court cases are portrayed in the film.’
