King of your own cut-price castle

Property on the market across Scotland for just £150,000

- By Paul Drury

THE price of the ‘average’ house in Scotland has steadily increased to just under £150,000. But what that buys you can vary enormously across the country. In some of the finer parts of Edinburgh, for example, you would be lucky to find a one-bedroom flat for that sum.

But venture outside the capital and you would be astonished at the bargains to be had. A 17th Century country castle, anyone?

Apartment One at Press Castle in Coldingham, Berwickshire, surely represents some of the best family accommodation on offer in Scotland today.

For £150,000, you get two holiday apartments and a studio in a beautiful rural setting within 13 acres of grounds.

The castle is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, just a few miles outside the lovely resort of Eyemouth on the coast.

The first-floor property on offer has operated successfully as holiday lets but the selling agents say it could easily revert back to a three-bed apartment in its own right.

You enjoy a grand communal entrance on the ground floor, with another landing and entrance hallway on the first.

Flat one has a hall, breakfasting kitchen, sitting room with bay window overlooking the gardens, and a double bedroom with en suite bathroom.

Flat two also has a hall, open-plan kitchen and sitting room, double bedroom, shower room and WC.

The apartments are inter-connecting and can be used as one big area. There is a large attic and studio apartment above.

The whole property is warmed by oilfired central heating. There is a septic tank, mains water and electricity.

The property is subject to a monthly service charge and each owner is part of the management company.

Apart from the sheer scale of the accommodation, it is what lies outwith Press Castle that will truly impress.

The gardens contain well-tended and mature communal grounds, with lawns and woodland for a relaxing walk. The area is also known for its red squirrels and assorted wildlife.

And, just a few miles away, lie the sandy beaches and charming fishing ports of the region.

Just think, for the price of the ‘average’ property, a Scotsman’s home could be his castle.
