Wagner’s unfinished business at Terriers
DAVID WAGNER rejected the opportunity to leave Huddersfield during the summer because he felt he could still take them further.
Wagner (below) was expected to move on at the end of last season, with West Ham and Leicester among the clubs who considered an approach for the German.
He instead opted to sign a £2.5million-a-year contract extension. Ahead of today’s trip to Manchester City, Wagner said: ‘I really like the people at this club, and that’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed.
‘But there is the feeling as well that we are not ready. We are still on our way and there’s a feeling that this club is still in progression.’
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has warned his City players of the dangers of facing Huddersfield so early in the season.
The champions opened their title defence with a comfortable win at Arsenal last weekend.
But they needed a late goal to beat David Wagner’s men away last year and then could only manage a goalless draw against them on the day they were presented with the Premier League trophy in May.
‘Last season was tough, those games,’ said Guardiola. ‘They defended so well. Huddersfield are so tough — physicality, defensively strong, good set-pieces, good throw-ins, good counter-attack, good high pressing.
‘It was complicated last season and I imagine quite similar games.’
David Silva’s return to fitness is timely with Kevin de Bruyne out.
