Cherries ripe for piling the pain on Pellegrini

-

MANUEL Pellegrini is still waiting for his first league points as West Ham boss after his Hammers lost 2-1 to Bournemouth at the London Stadium.

After the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on the opening day, many expected the new-look West Ham side to kick start their season at home to the Cherries.

Marko Arnautovic scored from the penalty spot following a foul on Javier Hernandez to put the Hammers 1-0 up.

However, on the hour mark Callum Wilson ran from near the halfway line before slotting the ball beyond Lukasz Fabianski.

Of his goal, Wilson said: ‘Just to score, I was stretching for the ball, turned, started running and it was opening up for me. I saw a gap, burst through and showed composure at the end.’

Just six minutes later, the visitors sealed victory as Steve Cook managed to break free from Angelo Ogbonna and head home Ryan Fraser’s set-piece.

Pellegrini said: ‘The squad, everyone must forget about last season, trust what we are doing and look to the future.

‘We knew we had a difficult start with fixtures but, at home, we must win.’

Hammers midfielder Jack Wilshere added: ‘We have had a tough start but everyone in this league has to be willing to fight and earn the right to play.’

With fixtures against Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham in their next seven games, they will have to prove it.

Newcastle’s Kenedy had an eventful day as his side drew 0-0 at Cardiff.

The Brazilian was fortunate not to be sent off in the first half after kicking out at Victor Camarasa.

Then in injury time, Kenedy had the chance from the penalty spot to snatch three points for Newcastle but saw his attempt saved by Neil Etheridge.
