Talk of the toon, as Hollywood falls back in love with Scottish accents
THEY are instantly recognisable to film and television fans thanks to roles in Trainspotting, Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy.
But for Kelly Macdonald and Karen Gillan, it is their accents which are now about to take centre stage.
Both are lending their distinctive Scottish burr to separate big-budget Hollywood animations.
Gillan is due to star as a go-getting secret agent in the upcoming film Spies in Disguise. Her character – called Eyes – will keep her Inverness accent and bears a striking resemblance to the red-haired actor.
The film also stars Will Smith, who provides the voice for Lance Sterling, a super-spy who is turned into a pigeon by his gadget inventor – played by Gillan’s Avengers co-star, Tom Holland.
Meanwhile, Macdonald – who was the voice of Merida for Pixar’s Brave in 2012 – will be reprising the role of the feisty princess in forthcoming Disney blockbuster Ralph Breaks The Internet.
A follow-up to Wreck-It Ralph, the comedy features princesses from other Disney films.
Macdonald’s Merida will meet Ralph’s sidekick, Vanellope von Schweetz, in an online Disney world. In clips of the sequel, Merida is shown telling a story to the other princesses as they all look on baffled. They then confide in Vanellope that none of them can understand anything the Scot is saying.
Spies in Disguise is due for release next September, while Ralph Breaks The Internet is out on November 21.
