Dad’s a Proclaimer, but I didn’t get my musical talent from him!

- By John Dingwall

SHE is the daughter of a Proclaimer – but singer Roseanne Reid believes she inherited her musical talent from her mother.

The 25-year-old folk musician is set to appear at Celtic Connections and will release her debut album next year.

Yet despite her father Craig Reid having written and performed such chart-toppers as Letter From America and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), she insists he had little to do with her career choice.

In fact Ms Reid – whose mother is Petra MacDonald, daughter of the late politician Margo MacDonald – hid her family connections so she would be taken seriously in her own right.

‘It was my mum who taught me to play guitar,’ she says. ‘I very much credit my mum for my career so far, especially in those early stages.

‘I kept who my dad was a secret for many years, up to the point where I thought I couldn’t any more, especially growing up in a small place like Scotland. The music scene is not massive and, when you get your foot in the door, everybody knows each other.’

Unlike her famous father, who made a name singing in a strong Scottish accent, Ms Reid opts for a more American twang, saying: ‘I’ve tried various songs with my own accent – I don’t think they sound so good.’

Her proud father says he has always tried to encourage his children to do what they wanted to do and ‘Roseanne has pursued her music. She is good at what she does and there is an audience for it. I just hope she keeps working at it and keeps improving.’
