VAR WILL NOT EASE HEAT ON REFEREES, WARNS IBROX NO 2

- By Gary Keown

RANGERS assistant manager Gary McAllister has admitted he is not completely sold on the argument over bringing in VAR to solve the refereeing crisis hitting Scottish football.

Both Hearts and Aberdeen have come out publicly to state they will put money towards funding video assistant referees and full-time officials — and they hope to discuss the matter in depth at a special SFA summit next month.

But the Old Firm have kept their powder dry and McAllister, fresh from seeing the Ibrox club fined £6,000 over criticism of leading official Willie Collum last week, still sees plenty of instances where VAR is not enough to end controversy and disagreement.

‘It boils down to opinions when it comes to VAR, doesn’t it? Everybody sees it totally different,’ he said.

‘Media, referees, coaches, players, they very rarely see it similarly. There are moments when VAR works, but, when it comes to those ones you can split hairs with, how do you make the right call?’

Rangers fans felt their side should have had a penalty in the midweek 0-0 draw at Hibernian when an Alfredo Morelos shot appeared to strike Mark Milligan on the upper arm.

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard expressed the view that it hit the Australian’s shoulder, but McAllister admits he can now see why there was such an outcry.

‘The more you watch it, there is a movement towards the ball. It’s an unnatural movement. That’s supposed to be a penalty by the letter of the law,’ he

said.

‘But if you flip it, if it was awarded against us, I don’t think you’d be happy. We’ve had decisions and had them go against us. I am more along those lines. It evens itself out.’
