Dieng must go back to basics after blunder, says his boss

- By Gary Keown

DUNDEE manager Jim McIntyre has warned Seny Dieng to focus his mind on doing the basics after seeing the Swiss goalkeeper commit a stoppage-time blunder that cost his side a precious victory at relegation rivals Hamilton Academical.

Dieng, signed on loan from Sky Bet Championship side Queens Park Rangers last month, charged from his goalmouth to deal with a long ball and ended up slicing it to Tony Andreu, who sparked off the passage of play that led to Darian MacKinnon’s spectacular equaliser.

The 24-year-old had earlier produced a magnificent reaction save to keep the visitors in front after Scott Wright’s 66th-minute opener and McIntyre has told him in no uncertain terms that he cannot make the same kind of mistake again.

‘The big thing for me is that if you come out of your box, you make sure you deal with the ball,’ said the Dundee boss.

‘Unfortunately, he didn’t do that.

‘He’s been excellent for us since he’s come to the club. In this game, he had a couple of excellent stops and took some really good crosses.

‘But — if you choose to come out for the ball — you have to make sure you clear it.

‘If there is a defender in a good position to deal with it, I think you should just hold your position.

‘Whenever you concede that late in a game, it is a real sickener.

‘We got too deep in the last 15 or 20 minutes and didn’t keep the ball well enough to get it up the park, where I thought there were real opportunities to hit them on the counter.

‘When you keep giving the ball back, it affords the other team chances and, to be fair, Darian did stick the ball away with great aplomb.

‘We’re disappointed because we were in a good position and these head-to-heads are so important, but I’m really pleased with a lot of our new players.’
