Warriors survive fightback to edge thriller

- By Steffan Thomas

GLASGOW WARRIORS withstood a ferocious comeback from the Cardiff Blues to solidify their position in the Guinness Pro14 play-off places.

The Warriors led by 16 points with nine minutes left only to end up defending a four-point lead in the closing stages.

But tries from Nick Grigg, Ali Price, Peter Horne, Nick Frisby and David Tameilau were enough to secure a bonus-point win for Dave Rennie’s side.

Aled Summerhill scored a hat-trick of tries for the Blues with Owen Lane and Garyn Smith also crossing the whitewash.

The Blues struck early with a terrific break from Jarrod Evans putting Lane into space. Lane was eventually brought down but the ball was recycled for Harri Millard to execute a well-weighted kick for Summerhill to score.

But then an Evans cross kick went awry allowing Ruaridh Jackson to race free. He drew his man and put Grigg in to score.

Soon after that, Grigg broke clear before offloading to Price, who ran in unopposed from 30 metres out.

Horne further extended Glasgow’s lead as he crossed at the far right-hand corner.

Before half-time, full-back Matthew Morgan sliced through the Glasgow defence to put Summerhill over again.

Cardiff made a sensational start to the second-half with Evans and Morgan combining to put Lane away for a top try.

However, Frisby touched down beneath the crossbar for the bonus-point score.

And just over a minute later, USA international Tameilau put the result beyond doubt as he crossed for Glasgow’s fifth try.

But just when the Blues looked dead and buried, a well-weighted grubber kick from Evans allowed Summerhill to touch down for his hat-trick.

And the Blues ensured a grandstand finish when Morgan sparked a terrific try which resulted in Smith getting over for Cardiff’s fifth.
