Missed opportunity in Greenock hurts McCall
AYR UNITED boss Ian McCall could not conceal his frustration after his side missed the chance to return to the top of the table following a Cappielow stalemate.
The Somerset Park boss said: ‘Ross Doohan has not had a save to make whereas we created three or four decent chances that Robby McCrorie did well with.
‘I don’t think they had a shot at goal.’
McCall’s side, who had the opportunity to overtake Ross County on goal difference, had the better of the few chances that were created but on-loan Rangers goalkeeper McCrorie put up the shutters to earn the Greenock men a point.
The Honest Men should have taken the lead on 18 minutes when a head-flick from Lawrence Shankland set Michael Moffat clear.
However, the striker was denied by McCrorie’s legs with the shot-stopper then leaping to his left to deny Ross Docherty’s effort from the loose ball.
Right on half-time, Shankland teed Moffat up for a second time when he rolled the ball across the six-yard box but McCrorie was again equal to the striker’s shot.
Ayr almost sneaked a winner three minutes from time when Craig Moore played the ball back to Shankland but the normally lethal striker’s drive came back off a post.
Morton manager Jonatan Johansson said: ‘I was happy with the performance. There was a really good work ethic and the shape was good.’
