We only have ourselves to blame, says McInnes

- By Gary Keown

ABERDEEN manager Derek McInnes hit out at his players last night for selling the jerseys against St Mirren and missing the chance to cut the gap at the top of the table.

Sam Cosgrove pulled Paul McGinn to the floor to give Saints an early penalty, which Lewis Ferguson cancelled out, and some poor play from Mikey Devlin and Andy Considine let Kyle McAllister score before Sam Cosgrove snatched a point.

‘We gifted St Mirren two goals and played our own part in our failure to win,’ said McInnes.

‘We scored two and two should have been enough. But it wasn’t because, I felt, in the first half, we gave a team with resolve and organisation a gifted penalty kick to give them a shot of adrenaline.

‘It was a game where we should have been good enough in all areas to win. We missed chances. Lewis should have scored another, Niall (McGinn) should have scored.

‘We had defensive (personnel) problems to contend with, but the goals shouldn’t happen.’

Defender Tommie Hoban was stretchered off after twisting his knee and will go for a scan tomorrow amid fears he has suffered a serious injury.

McInnes has expressed his happiness, though, at the extension of Ferguson’s contract until 2024 — news announced by his father Derek during a shift as an analyst on BBC Radio Scotland.

‘Not every player’s father works in the media and you can understand Derek’s pleasure at Lewis agreeing a new contract,’ said McInnes.

‘He hasn’t signed it. It is up to us to announce that, but no harm done. It is no more than the boy deserves.’

St Mirren manager Oran Kearney saw his men slip five points adrift at the bottom after Dundee won at Livingston, but insists there is no reason for alarm.

‘The goals were quite sloppy,’ he said. ‘We were caught ballwatching. If you’d offered us a point, we’d have taken it.

‘It is in our own hands. There is no big panic from that point of view.’
