Gerrard confesses he has a keen eye on Liverpool’s bid for long-awaited title

- By James Melville

STEVEN GERRARD insisted he would be ‘the happiest man in the world’ if Liverpool can finally end their 29-year wait to be Champions of England.

Gerrard won everything during his illustrious 17-year career at Anfield but the Premier League was the one thing to elude him, and most famously in 2014 when his slip at home to Chelsea saw the title escape from their grasp and into the hands of Manchester City.

Now he has hung up the boots and taken on the manager’s job at Rangers, but his attachment to his former club is still there.

With seven games to go and Liverpool holding a two-point advantage over City, Gerrard is nervous about what may happen in the next seven weeks.

‘Believe me, I am still feeling the pressure,’ he said after scoring the winner as Liverpool Legends beat their AC Milan counterparts 3-2 at Anfield yesterday. ‘It’s in the back of my mind. All my focus is on Rangers obviously, but I’ve got one eye on Anfield. ‘I just hope the lads get us over the line because I’ll be the happiest man in the world.’ With his next assignment an Old Firm game away to Celtic next Sunday, Gerrard wore the No 8 shirt one more time as he rolled back the years. Milan had come back from 2-0 down to level the match as it headed into the final minute. Cue vintage Gerrard. He made space on the edge of the box and drilled a shot into the net to give a full house at Anfield exactly what they wanted and a fitting reminder of what he did so frequently in his pomp.
