We love Boris – but can he turn Britain around?

-

Who should be the next Prime Minister? Many of us love Boris Johnson. He is charismatic and funny, so we forgive him his blunders. But is he Prime Minister material?

Meanwhile, Jeremy Hunt is sincere and articulate, and commands respect. Although a Remainer before the referendum, he accepts the result and says he has a clear and concise plan to deliver Brexit.

In her piece last week, Liz Jones referred to his ‘inner steel’ and, in the fight to become our Prime Minister, she likened him to Henry Cooper. Perhaps she should have added: ‘And Boris is more like Tommy Cooper!’

Boris Johnson is the man of the moment. He will sort out Brexit and I believe he will then lead the Conservatives to victory at the next General Election.

David Courtney, Weston-super-Mare

I agree with Boris when he says people don’t want to hear about his row with his girlfriend Carrie Symonds. Instead, let’s get on with delivering Brexit – and for that we need Boris, not Jeremy Hunt.

After Brexit, a big issue facing the new Prime Minister is HS2, and Jeremy Hunt’s enthusiastic support for the project should be a matter of real concern to taxpayers. His apparent ignorance of the serious failings and dangerous aspects of HS2 question his suitability to manage the nation’s finances.

HS2 is haemorrhaging taxpayers’ money at an incredible rate. Yes, it will deliver increased capacity on the rail network between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, with some reductions in journey times, but only at enormous cost.

When it comes to who should be the next Prime Minister, the question of personality and leadership style goes to the heart of the matter. One of the ways people can judge these qualities is through live television debates, and Boris’s unwillingness to take part in these debates is not just a PR disaster, it has reflected poorly on how people perceive him.

Oliver Steward, Norwich

Jeremy Hunt has all the qualities to make a good PM. He is a skilled negotiator and has made level-headed decisions at the Foreign Office.

Nick Fletcher, Malton, North Yorkshire

Does anyone know what’s going on within the once-great Tory Party? If they think Boris is the answer to beat Jeremy Corbyn at the next Election, they are mistaken.

T. Sayer, Bristol

If the leadership election splits 52 per cent to 48 per cent, does that mean Theresa May will remain at No 10 for three more years?
