Trolls made my life a nightmare, says star Amy

- By Georgia Edkins

SCOTS singer Amy Macdonald yesterday revealed how cruel online trolls had taunted her about her weight.

The 32-year-old, who has sold 12 million records worldwide, admitted she has been left with lifelong ‘body issues’ that she will never come to terms with.

Her brave confession follows a moving BBC documentary by Little Mix star Jesy Nelson, who told how she had attempted suicide after being trolled on social media about her looks.

The programme, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, shown on Thursday, sparked an outpouring of support from fans after the singer opened up about her struggle. Macdonald, from Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, said she had been moved to tears by the documentary, during which Nelson, 28, said she became obsessed with reading nasty comments about her. Macdonald, who once called herself a ‘chubby teenager into crisps more than cardio’, said it had stirred up feelings she had tried to overcome through exercise. She said: ‘I cried my eyes out watching the Jesy Nelson documentary.

‘When I started out, I was a chubby teenager and there was no end to the amount of keyboard warriors who wanted to tell me how crap I looked.

‘It has left me with body issues I’ll never get over.’

In the documentary, Nelson – who shot to fame on The X Factor in 2011 – told how she would search for the ‘worst things’ she could find about herself on Twitter – and it was only after she deleted the site that she ‘slowly started to feel normal again’.

Macdonald said: ‘Human nature means we always focus on that one horrible comment.’
