‘A lovely girl, supportive of his career, who makes him happy’
JAMES McAvoy has sparked speculation that he has secretly wed his American girlfriend after she was spotted wearing a ring resembling a wedding band.
The X-Men star, from Drumchapel in Glasgow, has been dating film production assistant Lisa Liberati for two years.
The pair are believed to have met in 2016 while McAvoy was divorcing his actress wife of 11 years, Anne-Marie Duff, 49.
Two months after the split was finalised, Miss Liberati and McAvoy, both 40, posted some revealing Instagram pictures of themselves at a fancy dress party.
Since then McAvoy has kept details of his new transatlantic romance relatively private but recently Jamie Lloyd, director of the actor’s upcoming West End play Cyrano de Bergerac, was overheard describing Miss Liberati as McAvoy’s wife.
He is also understood to have said she was ‘a lovely girl who is supportive of James’s career and makes him very, very happy’.
The comments come as a picture taken on the set of the TV series Dispatches From Elsewhere reveals Miss Liberati wearing a simple silver band on her ring finger.
Another image showing McAvoy and his new love walking near Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s Covent Garden in August also appears to show Miss Liberati wearing the ring. Many are now speculating that the pair have married in a secret ceremony. McAvoy, reportedly worth £11 million, shares a son, Brandon, with Miss Duff. The pair met while playing lovers Fiona Gallagher and Steve McBride in Channel 4’s hit drama Shameless and married at a low-key ceremony in 2006.
The break-up appeared amicable, with them subsequently working together on Netflix’s two-part animation of Watership Down, released last year.
McAvoy was even seen taking Miss Liberati to support Miss Duff as she performed in the West End play Sweet Charity earlier this year.
A spokesman for McAvoy declined to comment last night.
