Sherrock strides on with momentous victory over No 11 seed at the Palace
FALLON SHERROCK made history once more as she progressed to the last 32 of the PDC World Championship last night in stunning style.
A 3-1 victory over 11th seed Mensur Suljovic of Austria at Alexandra Palace eclipsed her midweek success against Ted Evetts in the first round, when the 25-year-old became the first woman to win a match at the tournament.
Sherrock missed only five doubles in a superb performance against Suljovic which she capped with a magnificent bullseye finish to seal the deal in the fifth leg of the fourth set.
When asked if she could win the tournament, Sherrock (below) said afterwards: ‘Why not? I have won two games, I am just going to take each game as it comes but there is nothing to say that I can’t. I am going to try.
‘I have just proved that we (women) can beat anyone. I have beaten two of the best players in the world. If that doesn’t show that women can play darts, I don’t know what does.’
She added: ‘I’m speechless. With everything that has been going on the last couple of days I have just been focusing on my finishing because I know that I can score.
‘I’m still waiting for it all to sink in. I don’t know how I’m going to sleep tonight. It’s amazing, when that dart (at bull to win) went in it was a sigh of relief.’
Sherrock took the first set before Suljovic levelled. But the Englishwoman surged to victory by winning the last two sets. She now faces Chris Dobey in the third round on Friday. Earlier in the day, two-time champion Adrian Lewis came from two sets down to edge out Spain’s Cristo Reyes 3-2.
World No6 Daryl Gurney easily saw off Justin Pipe 3-0 and now plays Glen Durrant, who beat Australian Damon Heta by the same scoreline.
Ryan Searle trounced fellow Englishman Steve West 3-0 and his reward is a clash with Scotland’s double world champion Gary Anderson. Japan’s Seigo Asada set up an encounter with Scot Peter Wright after edging out Keegan Brown 3-2.
Simon Whitlock thrashed Harry Ward 3-0 and Dimitri van den Bergh saw off Josh Payne by the same score in the final match of the night.
