We did all we could to make Meghan happy
Predictably, some people have seized on the Royal crisis to accuse the Establishment and the media of institutional racism. Yet this country has bent over backwards to accommodate Meghan, who was regarded as a breath of fresh air at the time of her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
Any split between the Sussexes and The Firm now has to be total. Pursuing commercial opportunities could cast doubt on the impartiality of the House of Windsor. Anthony Martin, Nunhead, South-East London
The current situation concerning the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is very distressing but what really angered me was the comments by author Philip Pullman, accusing people of discrimination. Did he not witness Harry and Meghan’s wedding and the thousands of people who turned out to wish them well? Shirley Teakle, Southend
I’ve read much of the reporting, letters and views on Meghan and Harry’s decision to step back. Some of the comments have been for, some against, and many have been able to see both sides of the argument. But nowhere have I seen any comments about Meghan’s colour, except from various celebrity friends, political bandwagoners and US tabloids, who have screamed ‘racists!’ at people in Britain. We’re not. We don’t care what colour she is (or nationality, size, religion, or anything else). We just gave her our support for making Harry happy, and welcomed her into our Royal Family. K. Bennett, Fowey, Cornwall
Why is it that Harry and Meghan wish to step back from their Royal duties but have called their website Sussex Royal? Sue Storey, Eastbourne
Harry and Meghan should have consulted the Queen about their intentions. They have been discourteous to Her Majesty. Nick Fletcher, Malton, North Yorkshire
When all is said and done, what’s the big deal about the couple spending some time in Canada and some time here? Harry is sixth in line to the throne so, to be blunt, he’s not that important. As long as the details can be worked out and the couple don’t abuse their Royal status, I say let them go where they will be happiest. Elaine Rogers, Lincolnshire
Why has there been all this agonising over who will pay for the protection of the Sussexes? They will make millions out of their decision to be independent, so they should have no trouble in funding (as others do) their own bodyguards. D. Harris, Fareham
The only thing Harry and Meghan have done wrong is going public before informing their family. That is not the way to do it. V. Brown, York
