Strictly’s Craig: I wanted children – until I caught my wife in bed with another man

- By Chris Hastings ARTS CORRESPONDENT

IT’S a twist certain to floor Strictly fans but Craig Revel Horwood reveals today that he and his wife planned to start a family during their short-lived marriage – until he caught her in bed with another man.

The TV dance judge tells the astonishing story in The Mail on Sunday’s Event magazine today, saying in typically waspish style: ‘That put a dampener on it.’

Craig married his wife Jane in 1990 when he was 25 and she was 30. He says: ‘Time was ticking. She wanted to have children and I thought, “Well, this is a really good opportunity.” I was both gay and straight, so being bisexual, it wasn’t a big issue for me or her.

‘We were two people who loved each other, coming together and wanting to have kids before it was too late. But then it ended in adultery. That was after two-and-a-half years. When you find someone in bed with someone else and they say they are in love with them, that puts a dampener on it.’

Three decades on, the choreographer and dancer, 55, who has been a judge on Strictly Come Dancing since its start in 2004, says he and his ex-wife remain close friends.

‘She runs my website. We go on holidays together. She’s remarried and she’s got a son. She sort of got everything she wanted in the end.’

Craig also reflects on some of the men in his life and recalls a relationship with a 43-year-old

‘sugar daddy’, whom he calls

Mr X, when he was 17. Mr X took him on a six-week world tour and paid dance college fees in Melbourne in return for sex.

‘It was a sugar daddy sort of thing. I knew exactly what I was doing,’ Craig admits.

He also reveals that he and his current partner – horticulturalist Jonathan Myring, who is 22 years his junior – have discussed marriage and starting a family.

‘I don’t have any plans yet. I would definitely adopt because there are so many kids out there who need secure homes.’

The Australian star dismisses the 189 complaints received by the BBC when Strictly last year had its first ever same-sex dancers, saying those people should be named and shamed. ‘Don’t pay your TV licence, don’t watch the BBC if you can’t cope with two men dancing with each other.’
