Marquee firm told: Don’t mess with the Presi-TENT

- By Claire Elliot

AS only the third US President to be impeached, he is at the centre of one of the most explosive trials in American political history.

And while Donald Trump battles to stay in office, his lawyers have been arguing a very different case in Scotland – in a row over an allegedly dirty tent and smelly toilets.

Trump International Golf Club Scotland Ltd asked Michael Findlay, who owns Craigievar Marquee and Luxury Tent Hire, to provide a marquee for a month-long series of events at the President’s Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire. However, the Trump organisation claimed the tent was of such ‘poor quality’ it had to be taken down after only a couple of days.

On Thursday, the company set up by the President went to Aberdeen Sheriff Court to demand Mr Findlay repay £10,618, claiming his firm – based in Kirkton, Aberdeenshire – had delivered a below-par tent, with ‘damp and smelly’ toilets.

Trump lawyers said: ‘The marquee exterior was of poor standard and quality. Almost all sections of the marquee exterior were damaged, soiled, creased or torn.’ Mr Findlay’s legal team argued he had provided a ‘marquee and facilities of a satisfactory standard’.

Sheriff Andrew Miller continued the case and said it ‘seems clear evidence is going to be required’. But the wrangle ended in victory for Mr Trump’s company on Friday when Mr Findlay agreed to settle out of court.

Dean Purdie, Mr Findlay’s solicitor, told The Scottish Mail on Sunday: ‘The court action has been settled between the parties. Mr Findlay is content with the outcome.’
