Wasps inflict Highland sting again

- By Roy Cameron

ALLOA signalled yet again they won’t be going down without a fight this season after inflicting another painful draw on play-off contenders Inverness

Caley Thistle.

In October, Peter Grant’s men left the Highlands with a share of the spoils, following a 2-2 draw.

And they repeated the feat last night to end the day still second bottom ahead of Partick Thistle but level on points with freefalling Queen of the South after taking their unbeaten league run to five games.

It’s the kind of momentum that could still see them survive in this cut-throat division — and Grant knows every point could yet be vital in the basement scrap come the end of the season.

He said: ‘I’ve been delighted with our performances. We showed another side today, the way we had to dig in at a tough place to come.’

Alloa broke the deadlock through Iain Flannigan’s first-half penalty after Kevin Cawley was fouled.

They rarely looked troubled until Jordan White finally breached the visitors’ defensive wall with a second-half equaliser.

The striker could then have won it right on full-time, only to head over the crossbar.

It capped a miserable day for the Highlanders, who have now frittered away an unlucky 13 points at home in the Championship this season.

And it stung even more as news filtered through that runaway leaders Dundee United had slipped up against Arbroath.

Inverness assistant manager Barry Wilson said: ‘I’m frustrated. We were chasing the game after the penalty, which we felt was soft. Results elsewhere went for us but we’ve not taken our chance.’
