Tributes to teen killed in bike tragedy

- By Georgia Edkins

THE family of a teenager killed in a quad bike crash have said their world has been ‘turned upside down’ by his death.

Adam Reid, 18, was driving on a country lane when his all-terrain vehicle left the road and plunged down an embankment.

Police, ambulance and fire crews rushed to help the youngster, who was found at Dochcarty Brae, Dingwall, Ross-shire, on Friday afternoon.

Despite their efforts, Mr Reid died at the scene. A fundraising web page dedicated to him read: ‘As most of you know, our family was turned upside down yesterday after the tragic loss of our very special Adam. I’m setting this up purely to help with any costs that need covered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.’

Mr Reid, from the Muir of Ord area, near Inverness, worked as an apprentice for Frank Nicol Farm and Garden Machinery Ltd, a Dingwall firm which sells quad bikes.

As a mark of respect, the family-run business was closed yesterday – and last night bosses issued a heartfelt tribute to their employee in a Facebook post.

They wrote: ‘It is with the greatest of sadness that we write this post. A tragic event took place yesterday which has left us all heartbroken.

‘Adam Reid was an amazing young man who we had the pleasure of calling our workshop apprentice, colleague and friend. He will leave a big void that we will never forget. We send our further condolences to Adam’s family and friends at this unbearable time. The shop remains closed.’

Yesterday, within 24 hours of its launch, the fundraiser had hit £4,835 of its £5,000 target and had been backed by 238 well-wishers.

Others have taken to social media sites to offer their condolences. Writing on Mr Reid’s Facebook page, Cherise Greig said: ‘Fly high.’ Neil Brown added: ‘Absolutely heartbroken to hear this sad, sad news.’

Dochcarty Brae was closed until Friday evening to allow officers to gather evidence from the scene.

Sergeant Ewan Calder of Police Scotland said: ‘Our thoughts are with Adam’s family and friends at this time. Our inquiries are ongoing.’
