Annie’s girl: Mum didn’t teach me to sing, my old schoolteacher did!
SHE is the daughter of one of Scotland’s most successful recording artists.
Now Lola Lennox – whose mother is Eurythmics singer Annie – is hoping to follow in her footsteps with her debut album.
But the 30-year-old says her superstar parent had no hand in helping to hone her vocals as she took weekly singing lessons from the age of eight.
She said: ‘I was like, “Oh, I love this”. At my school, there was a singing teacher, and I said, “Hey, I’d really love to learn with you”.
‘From there, I would have singing lessons once a week. I joined all the choirs, all the school plays, and I just got really, really immersed in music. It was my favourite thing.’
Despite not turning to her mother for singing lessons, she does look to her work ethic for inspiration.
Miss Lennox said: ‘She’s such a tuned in and inspiring person.
‘Her work ethic is so focused and she’s so passionate about what she does. She has always been very supportive of me – very encouraging and kind.
‘As a kid I would go on tour and watch amazing musicians play every night. There was music at home and at school and I was always encouraged to sing so I really grew up around a lot of music and that has inspired me a lot.’
As well as releasing In The Wild this month, she is planning three more singles and an album for later in the year.
Asked if she ever thought about changing her surname – her father is Israeli film and record producer Uri Fruchtmann – to relieve the pressure of expectation, she said: ‘My middle name is Lennox and
Lola Lennox sounds so good.’
Miss Lennox also recently sang on the soundtrack for Discovery Channel’s Serengeti.
She said: ‘I have had a dream since I was very young with my music.
‘Every day I’ve worked hard writing, singing and learning my craft, getting better as a writer and finding my voice. It doesn’t just come overnight and my passion for it has always been the thing that has carried me through.’
