Kate’s honesty about the guilt all mothers feel

-

What an honest and revealing interview you ran with the Duchess of Cambridge last week under the headline: ‘Kate: My struggle against mum guilt.’ It’s not clear where the phrase ‘mum guilt’ came from, yet the feeling of guilt associated with the many aspects of being a mother can affect us all in different ways.

Although guilt about going to work seems to be the most popular type, we shouldn’t be fooled – mothers are magnificent multitaskers and the list of things we can feel guilty about in addition to going to work can be endless.

We are over-thinkers, so we can feel guilty for all the times we are not a super-mum. And it doesn’t matter what class you come from – we all feel it.

As my dear old mum used to say: ‘As a mother, I can always assume I’m guilty of something.’ Josephine Drurie, Buckley, Flintshire

Another day, another Royal sob story about how difficult life is. It must be so hard having your hair styled, nails manicured, meals cooked, houses decorated, lawns mowed, flower beds weeded, children chauffeured about, washing and ironing done, and being waited on hand and foot. You then have to go and cut a few ribbons while people fawn over your every word. Clare Corbin, Duxford, Oxfordshire

As an adored wife, yummy mummy and delightful duchess, Kate is such an asset within the Royal Family, thankfully offering a bright ray of light and hope for our beloved Queen and her husband. Shirley Clancy, Hook, Hampshire

I note that Kate talking about her anxiety and guilt is accepted, but when Prince Harry speaks about his pain over his mother’s death, he is constantly criticised for speaking out. I am not surprised he has left it all behind. The constant comparison between the two couples is totally unfair. Maureen Aylward, Nottingham

Does anyone know what happened to the British stiff upper lip? Our country seems to be full of people whingeing and whining about matters our grandparents would have taken in their stride. It has now spread to the Royal Family, first with the Sussexes and now the Duchess of Cambridge, who, despite living in a gilded cage, finds it necessary to witter on about the difficulty of being a mum – something millions of women manage to do without all the public angst.

Whatever do the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh make of it all? D. Harris, Fareham, Hampshire

It was a pleasure to read about the Duchess of Cambridge’s struggle with ‘mum guilt’. I admire her honesty and her hard work in juggling family life and Royal duties, which she does extremely well. Diana Bromley, Lancashire

I was surprised to read Kate say ‘George and Charlotte were like…’ instead of ‘George and Charlotte said…’. Don’t you start, Kate! M. Cameron, Sidlesham, West Sussex
