THROWN AWAY

Hopkin is hurt by Morton’s late collapse at Cappielow

- By Lindsay Herron

IN A week of stunning performances and results, there was a classic in Greenock as Alloa came from 4-2 down to grab a point with two goals in the last five minutes.

Morton boss David Hopkin said: ‘It’s so frustrating to throw away two points when we’re 4-2 up with five minutes to go.

‘We sat too deep in the second half and we’ve given away bad goals. I’m bitterly disappointed. When you score four goals at home, you’ve got to win.’

Alloa took that lead thanks to Alan Trouten’s diverted effort in 20 minutes and Kevin Cawley’s wonderful strike into the top-right corner two minutes later after Kyle Jacobs had headed Morton ahead in 16 minutes.

But they were blitzed by three goals in five minutes before half-time.

Midfielder Luca Colville headed home Reghan Tumilty’s cross in 40 minutes. Then Tumilty netted after Alloa failed to clear Aidan Nesbitt’s ball in. Moments before the break, Morton winger Nicky Cadden crossed from the left and Bob

McHugh glanced a great header past Kieron Wright.

Four minutes from time, Kevin O’Hara slid a left-foot shot from a tight angle past Danny Rogers to make it 4-3 — and all of a sudden the Wasps had renewed belief.

Then in stoppage time, Cawley found space on the right and picked out Robbie Deas at the back post and the visiting defender headed home at the back post.

Alloa boss Peter Grant had mixed feelings on the stunning comeback that keeps them unbeaten in 2020.

He said: ‘Although we have done so well to come back at the end, I’m actually frustrated because I felt when we went 2-1 up we could win the game.

‘We gave away bad goals and that’s something we need to work on — but you can’t fault the spirit of the group.’
