KT: If I were a carpenter... rock star has designs on working as a joiner!

- By Beverly Lyons

ACCUSTOMED to wild antics, temper tantrums and adoring audiences, most rock stars would baulk at the thought of a slow and restful retirement.

But Scots singer KT Tunstall claims that when she decides to hang up her guitar, she would like to become a carpenter.

The 45-year-old’s surprising admission comes as the hit-maker finishes recording her new album – with some of the tracks featuring hellraising Can The Can rocker Suzi Quatro.

But while Quatro’s rock ’n’ roll lifestyle is legendary – including rampaging on stages and smashing televisions – Miss Tunstall is keen on a more peaceful life.

The singer, who shot to fame with smash hit album Eye to the Telescope in 2004, said she would rather ‘grow a beard, not wear any shoes and get a lot of dogs’. She added: ‘I’d love to be a jeweller and love to learn carpentry. I’d probably make surround console desks and make stuff for my studio, although don’t sit on any chairs I make.

‘I just like making things. Whatever happens and whoever I am as an old lady I’ll continue making stuff.’

She added: ‘If I had a devil on my shoulder, I’d eat the cookies, drink the whisky, smash the TV – I’ve never done it.

‘I’ve just finished making an album with Suzi Quatro and she apparently did smash a TV.

‘She is just an absolute legend.’ Miss Tunstall, from St Andrews in Fife, has recorded three new songs with Quatro, whom she hailed as the ‘quintessential rock ’n’ roll chick’.

Although the name of her new album is still shrouded in secrecy, Miss Tunstall did confirm she is about to embark on some new tour dates.

She will play as part of the Summer Nights series on concerts, at the Bandstand in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, in August.
